Baseball Batting Practice Get Something Out of it
Some players take a baseball batting practice lightly. You can make it interesting and improve yourself at the same time.
A BP should be as diversified as possible in order to keep it fun as well as effective. The more different drills you practice, the more aspects of hitting you are able to work on and improve. The most important point is to work hard on your weaknesses so you become a better hitter by eliminating those vulnerable parts of your swing.
WARM-UP
The batting practice should start with a warm-up; taking swings starting at low intensity going up to 100%. Then, in groups of 2 to 3 players, you hit some 45-degree toss for 2-3 rounds emphasizing on the technique (swings should be between 60% and 75% of a regular, game situation, swing.) When it is done, you are ready to start the real BP.
START HITTING
The order in which you make the drills does not matter that much, as long as you make them properly with good mechanics and intensity. You know you are definitely done with your batting practice when your bat speed is under 90%. When that occurs, you should stop because everything you’ll do when too tired will only get you develop bad habits which are difficult to get rid of afterwards. But don’t get me wrong, hitting when you are a little bit tired is good because, during a game, you are not always 100%. You then develop endurance by doing so. The thing is that during your batting practice, you have to be able to feel the difference between being tired and exhausted.
DRILLS DURING PRACTICE
There are many drills you can do in a baseball batting practice. To see some of them, I recommend visiting the page entitled Baseball Batting Drills
T-BALL
Don’t be afraid to use the T-ball! This is the most under used tool by younger hitters while certainly one of the best.
LIVE BATTING PRACTICE
The most known drill is certainly the live BP where a pitcher is set behind an L screen and throws to a hitter. This is the closest thing to a game situation. But often, during the baseball batting practice, the batter only tries to hit the ball as far as possible and completely forgets about his mechanics and the weaknesses he has to improve. One thing you should do during that drill is to simulate game situations (hit and run, moving runners over, bunts, sac flies etc.) Working the counts is a great thing to do for making the BP more fun as well as more realistic. Give situations to the hitter and see if he is able to complete the task he has to do. Ex.: runner on second, no one out. The hitter has to move the runner to third base with a count of 1-2 by hitting a grounder to second base and so on. Use your imagination and create situations!
Make that baseball batting practice fun while also improving yourself.
